There's nothing quite like a quiet night, vegging out to your favorite horse movie! These are some of my all-time favorite horse movies... Hope you find yours in here somewhere, too! :) Oh please note, these aren't necessarily in order of which I like best... Not sure if I could really pick ONE top favorite!
Unbranded is a documentary that follows four friends on a 3,000-mile horseback ride on horseback from Mexico to Canada, on horses that started out as wild Mustangs.
Buck tells the life story of world famous horse trainer, Buck Brannaman. It follows him from his abusive childhood, through his journey to becoming the amazing horseman that he's now known for being.
Wild Horse, Wild Ride
"Each year, through the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, 100 people across the country attempt to tame a wild mustang in 100 days. Following this dangerous and harrowing feat performed by everyday people from every walk of life, is a public showcase that determines whether these horses can be saved from a life in captivity. Complete with first-hand footage and interviews, Wild Horse Wild Ride provides an in-depth look at the incredible relationship that blossoms between man and animal."
The Man from Snowy River
This movie is at the top of my list, because, seriously, who doesn't love The Man from Snowy River? I even have the piano music to a couple of the songs that I love to play. And we can't forget about the epic scene where... Oops, I can't give that away if you haven't seen the movie! All I will say is it's definitely a must-see!
Return to Snowy River
Go back to Snowy river with the sequal to The Man from Snowy River... There's love, cute cowboys, and lots and lots of pretty horses!
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken
This is another childhood favorite of mine, about a girl who dreams of learning the sport of high diving on horse back, but faces an unforeseen challenge when she loses her sight, but decides to pursue her dream despite her blindness.
If you like stories about the underdog, you'll love Hidalgo. It's the story of cowboy, Frank Hopkins, who's mustang Stallion, Hidalgo's, reputation as the fastest horse in the world, gets challenged, so he gets sucked into a race in the Middle East, where they are pitted against the fastest horses in the world in the race of their lives.
"Based on the inspiring true story of three men - a jockey, a trainer and a businessman - and the undersized racehorse who took the entire nation on the ride of a lifetime."
Another great favorite, based off of the true story of Penny Chenery Tweedy and her stallion on their journey to set the, as yet, unbeaten record for winning the Triple Crown, in 1973.
Flicka is one of those movies that always makes me start yearning for the wide open spaces of Wyoming or Montana! The cast in this movie is spot on, featuring Tim McGraw, for example. It's the classic love story of a girl and her horse. Definitely a must-see!
The sequel to Flicka features an entirely different cast, and isn't quite as good as the first one, but it's still a fun movie. Follow the story of troubled teen who goes to live on her father's ranch in Wyoming and finds healing with her cousin's Mustang, Flicka.
Flicka: Country Pride
Oooooohhhhh there's another Flicka!! Ok, moment of total truth, I haven't seen this one yet... Just found it as I was getting the first two Flicka's up... But this one has Clint Black AND his wife in it, and how cool is that? Sorry, rabbit trail! Anyhoo, I figured I'd add this one to the list, just because I got all excited when I found it. Hope it's good!
Another great movie that was inspired by a true story, Dreamer is the story of a little girl who dreamed about having her own race horse... And pursued that dream until it came true!
Ok so this is a show, rather than a movie, but it's still one of my favorites! An Australian tv show about a group of women who run a ranch, and all of the adventures that they have, it's hours of great entertainment!
